Temptation

Oh no ...

There's a new Ironman Arizona race November 23, 2008. Same relatively flat course as the April race, just later in the year when heat and gusty winds will hopefully be less than they have been the past 3 years when the race has been held in April.

And late November could work well for me ...

And there's only 7(!) participants listed so far ...

Would everyone PLEASE register and fill up that race ASAP???

PLEASE!!!

No Can Do.

I need to work up to a Half-Ironman and I have yet to do the International/Olypmic distance... although the games in Beijing next year just may have doing an Olympic distance!

Why do YOU sign up for it?

Because I'm trying to save doing an ironman distance race to cap my 50 States marathon quest in 2011 for my 50th birthday.

The difficulty, though, is I've got this BIG IM DNF monkey on my back because I missed the swim time cutoff at IMFL due to very rough water conditions last year. Now with 2 yrs of swimming exp, I'm itching to try again.

If only the IM races could continue to sell out quickly or be held at times of the year that didn't work well with my training schedule. I was fine until they announced this new race.

Shirley,

you can sign up for this IM...finish the swim then DNF :)...

I would love to but Wisconsin is my next IM. IM-MOO suppose to have the toughest weather condition ever...and I look forward to that in 2009.

Do it! Do it! Do it! No better time than the present... no need to save it for the 50th! You can plan something even bigger for 50th... like Ultraman! ha ha ha...
DO it! DO it! DO it!

Cliff, you crack me up. Wish we could meet up at a race in the future though!

And Bree, you're no help ;-) But the run in Ultraman would definitely count.

I hear ya. It's taking all my restraint to not go against my no Ironman in 08 promise and sign up for Arizona.

Hi Shirley,
I'm not planning on IMAZ. I kow from past experience that November is actually too late in the year for me as I tend to start winding down. Plus I haven't been planning on an IM in '08 (altho' just this morning, someone planted the idea as a possibility).
You should do GREAT.
You should be able to easily make the swim cut-off--if the swim is still being held in Tempe Town Lake. The water is calm and relatively warm, although also wetsuit legal. I did the SOMA Half IM on the same course (unless they moved it along with the new date), and the only difficulty I had was looking into the sun as it was rising.
I know your DNF is a monkey on your back, but you have really improved your times and I think you'll be successful at any race you chose to do. Best of luck! in your decision. :)

I failed to mention in my race report that the fellow I ran the last 6 miles with had completed 2 Ironmans.

I say, of course, go for it!

p.s. I forgot to tell you that "Tempe Town Lake" is really a broad cement canal with murky water. Surprised me when I first saw it. You can't get lost--you have the canal on either side, and bouys making a rectangle in the middle that you swim around, counterclockwise, plus haphazard kayakers to guide you (at SOMA, the kayakers didn't help much).
Like I said, you'll do great at whichever race you choose. Good luck!

Thanks Skoshi for all the info on IMAZ. I'm so burnt out now from racing and training though that I'm not going to make any decisions until at least after Xmas. With any luck, perhaps IMAZ will have filled up by then!
