WOWEE! I've sweated more than I have running a marathon. My whole body ached as if I'd just done a maximal strength workout 50 times. My heart rate stayed elevated for two days and I lost 2 pounds.
So what was this amazing workout I did? Was it CrossFit, Kettlebells or some other latest killer functional workout?
Yeah, I wish.
Unfortunately, it was the darn FLU. The little cough I had Monday night morphed into something much more evil after my Tuesday morning swim. I spent much of the day and all day Wednesday in bed.
Today I'm feeling much better. Did one strength workout today and I'm clearly not 100%, but even 50% is far better than before. This Sunday I have a half marathon in Jacksonville (a couple hours away) that I had been planning to run with some friends and Coach Bill says to use my judgement. It's one thing to make a dumb mistake on your own when no one's looking but another when someone is watching. Hopefully the answer will become more apparent by Sunday.
Wish me luck!

Oh, Shirley! I hope you are 100% better soon. The flu sucks worse than the worst workout. Hang in there and listen to your body. Remember you may feel ok before the race but consider what the race is going to take out of you- it may set you back in your recovery. Good luck either way! (hug)
Yes, good luck! Really you shouldn't run, but it is always so tempting...
I hope you feel good enough Sunday to have a good run! I had the same thing on New Year's Eve, so I know how you're feeling! Remember, if the symptoms are above the neck, you can safely workout; if below, you should not.
Oh no, the Flu. Man that really stinks, I hope you feel better soon.
Yikes! Feel better!
A friend of mine had mono and lost 30 pounds. He said it was the best weight loss technique ever. :)
Glad you're back on your feet!
Good luck... Conventional wisdom might say not too run, but...
I got flu bug or something last November, spent a day sicker than a dog, a night with almost no sleep and then did a tri. I wasn't in the best shape when I was done (mostly dehydration I think), but by the end of day after I as healthy as a horse!
My last bout of sickness 4 weeks ago, got carefully nursed, and after 3 or 4 resurgences, I finally had to go to the doc to get rid of it.
So I'd go with doing the race, but I'm not exactly sane, so take that for what it's worth!
Feel better soon!
get well soon! the flu is no fun :-(
What a drag! I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. Hope you are back to 100% in time for your race. I'll send you my very best healing mojo!
Rest Well!!! Hope the fever breaks and you are READY TO RUN!
It seems like everyone is getting sick lately. Better now then in the middle of tri season. Hope you feel better before Sunday
SO SORRY about the flu. Hope you feel even better soon and have a great run on Sunday, if you decide to do it.
Sorry to read about the flu. Our younger son felt poorly Sunday then spent Monday in bed (when his temperature reached close to 40C. However, on Tuesday he was fine again.
Maybe doing the race will be fine, only focus more on enjoying it in case it isn't your fastest. I have been a little tired recently, and so I have just swum more slowly. The weather is great now for outdoor swimming - water was 72F today and it was sunny.
getting sick is no fun, but especially right before a race...I can't imagine your body being ready for a half so soon this weekend...go with your gut on whether to run, but be smart about it. wishing you a quick and complete recovery.
Hope you get to feeling better. Good luck on the race, you will do great!
Feel better fast Shirley!
oh no!!!!! feel better soon!!!
Oh dear Shirley - I hope you feel better in time... It sounds like you didn't suffer too harshly - you may be okay. But take it easy on yourself - though I should talk ... Be wiser than I am my dear! Lots of love and a big hug - virtually so you don't pass on your bug...
Get better!
Be careful Shirley. I speak from experience when I say that a minor illness can blossom into something life threatening when paired with a tough race.
I thought you had a secret ultra super good new workout when I started reading your post... then I just laughed, good one!
Hope you're feeling at your 100% by now, good luck on sunday.
Oh!I am so sorry you are sick! There is certainly some nasty flu going around I have seen and read about so many sick people. Take it easy getting back to your training. You don't want to prolong this thing.
Being sick is the worst. Drink plenty of liquids and get well soon.
Good luck tomorrow!
Hope you're feeling better.
Wow, everyone has been getting the flu here too. Hang in there Shirley. Sounds like you're on your way to a full recovery!
I had the flu too! Ugghh!. I think I'm feeling better though.
Yuck. Illness just swept our household as well. I feel like I walk around with a cross as if I'm fending off vampires. Blood-sucking viruses!!
Oh no! Get much better very soon Shirley!!
